How to give your dog a treat Correctly

The best technique for giving a treat to your dog is to hold the treat in your two fingers and allow your dog to sniff it.

Let your dog know that you have to treat with you.

When you are allowing your dog to smell anything, you are activating the most important part of your dog, his brain

Remember that in terms of canine, nose first means let them smell, then eyes let them see and examine, and ears last.
  1. After smelling is done, it is time for eyes.
  2. Hold the treat right on the top of his nose and move from his back towards his shoulders.
  3. Take the treat slowly so that your dog can still sniff it.
  4. When your dog jumps, move the treat away.
  5. Now hold the treat close to his head.
  6.  When his eyes and nose start to follow the treat, give him a command like ‘sit’ in a calm voice.
  7. As soon as he sits, give him the treat

Keep in mind that you give him a command in a soft voice so that he will follow your command and learn the behavior. Your harsh voice can frighten him, and he may not learn the behavior.

Using reinforcement while training a dog is the best way to get your dog to obey you and carry out commands, but the reinforcement has to be positive!

Positive reinforcement training is very crucial in training animals, very crucial in such a way that it is regarded as the best way of training animals and it is applicable to even wild animals.

Proponents of positive reinforcement swear by the effectiveness of their techniques, and it is true that the vast majority of dogs respond well to these training methods.

How does it work?

Positive reinforcement is simply rewarding your dog with food, praise, toys or attention right after it performs the intended behavior (eg sitting).

When teaching a new behaviour, food is often used because it is quick and effective.

By doing so, you are increasing the likelihood of the behavior occurring again.
It works, is easy to use and does lesser harm than the alternative training; by punishment.

As mentioned, food is positively reinforcing and therefore is a valuable training tool.

To properly use food, you must establish the behavior to the point that the dog understands what behavior it must perform on its own in order to earn reinforcement, and then, you must quickly begin weaning away the food as discussed above.

Because food is so successful in getting behavior, many dog owners become too dependent on it and do not reduce and eliminate it soon enough.

Thus, dogs can learn to only respond when food is present.

Rewarding your dog for good behavior sounds pretty simple, and it is! However, to practice the technique effectively,
you need to follow some basic guidelines:

  • Timing

Correct timing is essential when using positive reinforcement. The reward should be given immediately after an action; within seconds or your pet may not associate it with the proper action.

For example, if you have your dog sit but reward him after he’s stood back up, he’ll think he’s being rewarded for standing up.

Using a clicker to mark the correct behavior can improve your timing and also help your dog understand the connection between the correct behavior and the treat.

  • Keep it short

Dogs don’t understand sentences. Keep commands short and uncomplicated. The most commonly used dog commands are “sit”, “stay”, “down”, “come”, “heel” and “leave it”

  • Consistency is key

Everyone in the family should use the same commands; otherwise, your dog may be confused. It might help to post a list of commands where everyone can become familiar with them.

Consistency also means always rewarding the desired behavior and never rewarding undesired behavior.

One reason that positive reinforcement training is so effective is that it uses rewards to teach the dog what is expected of it.

When the dog performs the desired behavior, he is provided with a reward, most often in the form of a food treat, but it could be a scratch behind the ears, a rub under the chin or a pat on the head as well, or toys.

The important thing is that the dog is rewarded consistently for doing the right thing.

When understanding what makes reward training so effective, some knowledge of the history of humans and dogs is very helpful.

The earliest dogs were probably wolf pups that were tamed and used by early humans for protection from predators, like alarm systems and later for guarding and herding livestock.

It is possible that the wolf pups that made the best companions were the most easily trained, or it is possible that these early dogs were orphaned or abandoned wolf pups.

Hierarchy, The Pack Leader

Wolf packs, like packs of wild dogs, operate on a strict pack hierarchy. Since wolf and dog pack hunt as a group, this type of hierarchy, and the cooperation it brings, is essential to the survival of the species.

Pack Rules :

  • Every dog in the pack knows his or her place in the pack, and except in the event of death or injury, the hierarchy, once established, rarely changes.
  • Every dog, therefore, is hard-wired by nature to look to the pack leader for guidance.
  • The basis of all good dog training, including reward-based training, is for the handler to set him or herself up as the pack leader.
  • The pack leader is more than just the dominant dog or the one who tells all the subordinates what to do.
  •  The pack leader provides leadership and protection, and his or her leadership is vital to the success and survival of the pack.
  • It is important for the dog to see itself as part of a pack, to recognize the human as the pack leader, and to respect his or her authority.

A dog with a more submissive personality will generally be easier to train using positive reinforcement since he or she will not want to challenge the handler for leadership.

When clicker training is combined with positive reinforcement, you get the best dog training section.

Clicker training is all about reward and association – the clicker is designed to signal to your dog that he or she has done something good or to signal response from your dog. This kind of training is often much more rewarding than traditional dog training methods.

Everyone knows how important it is for dogs who tend to unleash, to take nose work activities and tasks as their play.

Tips to get started with nose work classes

The first month is about initial task days, where your dog will be given food in different boxes, which shapes like a shoebox.

The price of the training needs to be discussed beforehand with the instructor of your dog;
as duration may levitate the final training bill.

You can also bring treats for after the training, which will get your dog excited every time.
It can be anything delicious like meatballs or hotdogs or anything your dog loves.
Your dog will be trained to research and distinguish 3 different odors, Birch, Anise, and Clove.

Birch is the odor that is start off with, this odor is the begin of the NW1 level.

Your dog will start recognizing the treat and will know that the odor will get them the treat. Practice over practice will make your dog a perfectionist, your dog will move ahead of containers and boxes.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that containers are the initial step to all nose work sports. Your dogs will go through tasks that will determine whether the dog can find the odor in 1 container.

  • semi-pricked ears and some have fully erected,
  • Brown or blue eyes, and occasionally different eye colors in the same dog (normally in the Merle border collie)

It is very easy to train a border collie, as they are highly intelligent dogs. They normally learn new commands in lesser repetitions. Their obedience and willingness, combined with their intelligence make them the most fun and fast trainable dogs.

The Downfall With Bordercollies

However, there is a downfall to their high level of intelligence as well :

Border collies have higher chances to easily getting bored with training sessions.

Train your sheepdog with Positive reinforcement;

How to socialize a Border Collie puppy

sheepdog border collies puppy dog breed

Border collies are highly sociable dogs with people and animals, both.

A part of caring for, and of having a happy life with a Border Collie, is to keep them from becoming shy and reserved in adulthood.

These sheepdogs need to be socialized at an early age to have a calm and stable temperament.
By socializing, it means to make your border collies interact with other animals and humans, which will make the adult Border Collie a confident and friendly adult dog.

Or if you adopt a border collie as an adult, they can still be socialized. However, this will take more time, and more money as this may require professional intervention.

Caring for a border collie also requires giving them a loving family atmosphere where they live.

So You cannot leave these sheepdogs alone for hours on end, as this will affect their mental health.

This breed of dogs loves playing, especially with children. If you know my best friend “Buddy ” then you know what I’m talking about.

So, to care for border collies, give them time, affection and remember that they need a cozy environment, like a big family to develop in, as they were breed to be as herding dogs, they need sheltering packs to thrive.

Caring for a border collie’s health

Like any other dog, this breed will need vaccination appointments and regular check-ups from vets. This breed normally enjoys good health; but sometimes can sometimes have the tendency to suffer from hip dysplasia, epilepsy, eyes diseases, and neurological disorders.

Therefore, a Border collie requires constant check-ups with the vet, so these diseases can be spotted in time and can be prevented.

Border collies also require :

  • an hour and a half of exercise, which include walks and activities, and
  • 3-4 Times a Week Brushing the coat,
  • Teeth should be brushed regularly,
  • Check ears for signs of infections

If you have the chance, let your Border collie train to herd actual sheep, this will help him release most of his energy.

  • Malinois are quick learners obedient to their owner.
  • They are eager to do whatever their owners ask them to. Anything a Belgian shepherd is asked to do, they take it as a play and enjoy doing it.

Relation with Children

Although Malinois are very good with children, they may tend to nip at their heels, and they try to herd them while playing. Normally, Belgian shepherds are good enough dogs to be kept at home and raised with children, if bred properly.

The personality of a Belgian shepherd

  • Malinois are confident dogs, and they will consider it their duty to protect their owners at any time, any situation.
  • They are affectionate to their family members.
  • A malinois watchdog ability is the best feature; they will protect and fight for his people and property with only as much strength as required.
  • A Belgian shepherd should never be brought up as shy and reserved, as this can rise temperament issues in your dog.
  • Along with other factors like herding and training.
  • Malinois puppies who have nice temperaments will be responsive to other human, playful and will want to be held as well, like curious little creatures.
  • A Malinois will inherit its temperament from its parents, especially their mothers if they are around.
  • Always check the parents before adopting a Belgian shepherd, for temperament issues.
  • Taking Malinois to busy parks, inviting visitors over every day in order for them to meet and socialize, and often to stores that allow dogs, can help Belgian shepherds develop a playful personality. These aspects will give you the whole insight of a complete malinois guide.

The health of Belgian shepherds

Belgian shepherds are normally healthy dogs, but like any other breed, they will be prone to some health conditions. Not all Malinois will necessarily get all or any of this disease, but if you have a Belgian shepherd, you will need to look out for them.
Before adopting a Malinois puppy, make sure to check its parent’s health clearance.

Consult a Good Breeder

A good breeder can get that job done for you. Health clearance will make sure the dog has been tested for and cleared for a certain disease.

Belgian shepherds will need to check for hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, elbow dysplasia, and certifying that the eyes are normal. For a complete walkthrough a Malinois guide, you need to understand every step.

Sensitivity to Anesthesia

Malinois are also very sensitive to anesthesia. There is a higher chance of death for Belgian shepherds if they are put under anesthesia, because of their muscle to fat ratio. Make sure your vet knows of these details before putting your Belgian shepherd under surgery or teeth cleaning.

Care for Belgian shepherds

Belgian shepherds normally do well in spacious homes, where they can run around, play, and exercise. But they can do well in small apartments as well if they receive enough exercise.

A cool climate will be preferable for a Belgian shepherd, but they can also adapt well in warm environments. They love being a part of the family and love staying outdoors for most of the time; these conditions bring the best of them.

Reading Time: 4 minutesOne of the fascinating aspects of the Police force is trained dogs and their handlers known as K9 Dog Units.

The use of dogs for hunting is dated back to Roman times, and they were inducted in law enforcement over a hundred years ago.

The bloodhounds helped in search of Jack and the Ripper in 1888;
soon after that the dogs were properly trained for the police by the Europeans.

K9 Dog Units are the main asset of police force across the United States, but the question is

where do they come from or how they are trained?

In this article, we will answer these questions and have a look inside how these K9 Dog Units are trained and maintained.

How does any dog become a Police Dog?

K9 dogs are carefully selected by one of two ways:

  1. One option is that a green dog is purchased having age between 7 to 14 months with basic training based on obedience.
  2. This green dog is sent on a training period of 4 to 12 weeks.
  3. The second way is to buy a fully trained dog which is trained by the officer assigned for this purpose. The selection process depends upon the purpose for which the dog is used for or how much funding is available to be invested by the Police Department.

These K9 units extremely demanded by the officers and they work hard to get one, and for this purpose, they also obtain dog training.

But to build a relationship and trust between the K9 unit and his handler is one of the most challenging steps in this process.

Before assigning them specific duties of:

  1. bomb detection,
  2. patrol
  3. narcotic

The officer and dog both are certified by an independent organization.

What does Police Dog training entail?

K9 dog units are trained for single or dual purpose service:

  • Single purpose dogs are used for personal protection, backups or tracking.
  • The dual purpose dogs are more popular and adequately trained to do everything as compared to single-purpose dogs with the ability to detect narcotics or explosives.

The main reason the police dogs are trained for a single purpose is that they are unable to communicate with the officer through words.

The police protocol for explosives is entirely different as compared to narcotics.

Why police dogs are trained with German commands?

Due to the fact, the service dogs are trained in German, mostly so it will be easier for owners to have more control over them.

Well trained dogs can respond to every one command irrespective of their owner;
But the German language is used for extra precaution.

How does the K9 Dog unit identify a Threat?

Dogs usually follow a “drunk uncle scenario,” and they follow the body language of their handlers to make a judgment call.

If the officer is tensed or backing up the dog will read the body language of the handler and react more aggressively either by command or by judging the scene.  But if the handler is relaxed and walking towards prospect, the dog will be relaxed.

Are K9 Dogs aggressive all the time or loving too?

K9 dogs can be both loving and aggressive depending upon the situation.

Most people have a wrong perception regarding their all-time aggression as protectors and this cannot be kept as pets.

But in fact, they can be loving too they tend to remain alert as they are trained for this particular reason;
In other words, Protection.

How to become a successful dog trainer?

The successful K9 dog units depend upon the skills of their trainers.

They made them ignore the smell of dog food, birch trees, and tennis balls and catch drugs like heroin.

The training of dogs starts when they are at the age of 8-10 months.
The training of K9 dogs to detect is a big deal which can go up to six months.

Certain breeds for K9 unit’s training

The two races are selected for K9 dog units’ training that can be served for military purpose or protection works.

The two main breeds that are selected for K9 Dog training are:

  1. Belgian Shepherd Malinois
  2. German Shepherd

The sub-type of German shepherd includes giant schnauzers, Labrador retrievers that are common for police jobs.

The reason they are preferred for training because they have specific traits that come in their bloodline.

Other than these particular traits they need to be smart and more social because they have to interact with all sorts of persons.

Is gender important factor during their selection?

A selection of dogs for K9 dog units based upon their gender is a highly debated topic.

In reality, the reaction of both male and female dog remained extraordinary in their service;

But every dog has its personality.

  • In fact, male dogs are more aggressive because they are always “on.”
  • On the other hand, female dogs can become stubborn once they made up their minds not to comply.

Do K9 Dog Units respond to Siren?

The siren and lights training is not included in dog training. But, they are smart enough to respond to siren and lights as almost every dog goes excited when the lights and siren go off.

Reading Time: 4 minutes

A dog user manual is difficult to find in the library, this is the reason why in this Article I have collected 10 “Must Know” Things before getting a dog.

It’s difficult to be a user manual person. Some people have this habit of reading and going through all of the instructions before they buy any product. They look up information to take care of the product and how well they can maintain it so that it lasts for long.

Unfortunately, with dogs no user manual comes up, well that is because they need to be taken care of individually. One can only develop their own dog user manual after they start taking care of their dog. But there are some general things that you can have in your mind that can help you before getting a dog.

1- Choking hazard

Just as a home is made kid proof, before the arrival of a baby, a home should also be made dog proof before getting any dog, this is my first dog user manual tip.

Which means that hide your scrabble, small toys and every little tool that you think that your dog can choke on to and can get you and your best friend in trouble it is a major tip before you get a dog that you prevent the choking hazard from happening, instead that you worry about getting to the hospital and go ambiguous for a long time just watching your dog squeaking wondering what is actually wrong with him, when it’s a choking hazard. It’s not every day that like Ross Geller from Friends a coincidence of scrabble happens.

2- All those hair

The main worry of dog lovers is that they are really afraid of all that shedding of hairs. Don’t worry it’s just a season and your pet will get okay. Get some tools like combs and look for some hack online, vacuum properly. The one thing that can prevent this massive incident from happening is that you take your dog to its groomer every once in a week and get him cute and cuter again. It is one important thing from you use manual.

3- Getting the delicate things out of reach

If you love those ceramic utensils and crockery you got or you have some classic British set up in your home and are deciding to adopt a dog. Then you have to get used to an empty or at least a bit empty home or get non-delicate stuff. Because a non-trained dog can create a hell of a mess. It can hurt them in many ways and your expensive things will always be at danger.

4- Get some toys for your dog

Dogs are all about toys. You can get toys on the basis of their age you can get plush toys so that your best friend can play around and snuggle with them. Plush toys are good for puppies because of one obvious reason that they are soft and puppies cannot tear them and choke on to them just yet. Then according to their age, you can get them a play bone or a tennis ball with which they can play the fetch game.

5- Know your dog’s reaction to certain foods

labrador dog food healthy

The 5th dog user manual tip is that You should be always aware of your dog’s digestive system. Some dogs are not good with every food you offer them. You have to be sure of what suits them like if Natural grain free dry dog food is not what they have a knack for then you should just consult with someone and try different foods. Also, it is important that you change their foods in variety.

6- Your dog might throw up

Just like human beings dogs also can get bloated and puke very often. Another important thing from your dog user manual is that you should get them to their vet but for emergency purposes, you should always know the home medicines that are available, should be a part of your dog’s shelf. It may come in handy later on. These are to be kept after consultation from your vet of course.

7- Don’t just let him wander about the house

In other words, the dog should have his own place in your home so that he feels cozy and at home.
Buy some accessories as well for his place it will make him feel fancy and also can help up with his moods and the weather.
You can buy things like a small bed, or a comfy blanket for really cold weather.

8- A routine vet round is necessary

labrador veterinary vet

Don’t just make your dog go to the vet when he is extremely sick or even just sick. A maintenance checkup is very important in this dog manual because these poor guys unlike the human beings cannot rant the whole story of their sickness and what they feel. So, this point kind of makes the vet visits a month a mandatory measure.

9- Cleanliness is important

dog care grooming nail cut toys

Cleanliness is not only important with kids and other human beings but with dogs as well. Make them take a bath in a routine, don’t make them use to having dirt on their paws, have their nails cut and do them a haircut.

10- Remember! They are family

Now that you have a pet in your home, just remember that they are a part of your family and are to be loved and taken care of just like children. Their age, breed and overwhelms should not be a problem for you. Take patience and do your work.
These are really the main dog user manual tips you need, aren’t they?
